Hello DailyLGBT followers. As you’ve noticed, this blog has become inactive, there were a number of reasons why I have let this blog go, none of which really matters.

I, along with Cassandra [Saturday], made a new blog called The Queer Community. It’s a similar blog but instead of there being specific topics and a specific number of contributor’s, this blog is open to everyone about everything [everything queer that is!]

If you want to be a member, inquire at The Queer Community’s ask box. We do not have a specific number of people, no quota to fill. We are open for many members to join.

And you can post when you want about whatever you want, as long as you are not harassing or hurting anyone.

So I encourage you all to make your way over there. Thank you for your patience with this blog.

Hello Contributors And Followers

First of all, I want to say that I am extremely sorry that this blog just sort of fell off the face of the earth for a time. As some of you may know, my little sister had cancer and she had gone down hill tremendously around the time I stopped this blog. Last Monday, June 6th 4:20 pm, my sister passed away. This has been something that needed my full attention and I just couldn’t find myself getting on the internet to do pretty much anything. I’m sorry if anyone felt like I let them down by not communicating what was going on.

I would like to start this back up and have it running again, I miss this blog.

So let’s start with getting some suggestions in for next week’s topic. Please send your suggestions and your questions to the ask box.

Peace and Love from your Wednesday.

Hey everyone, sorry we haven’t posted this week. Keiha’s been a bit under the weather and unable to moderate at this time but we will be up and running again soon. Thank you all for your patience. :D

Last Chance!

Last chance to submit your ideas for the weekly topic next week!

Say Hello To Our New Saturday!

*EDIT: Unfortunately, our Saturday contributor Marina can no longer be a part of DailyLGBT. We wish her luck in school and with life!

We have a new contributor and very close person in my life whom I care a lot about and this is her introduction!*

My name is Cassandra and I am a pansexual. It took me 19 years to figure out who I am and to not be afraid of my sexuality. And after extensive research, fantastic support systems finding strength to start a completely new chapter in my life I have found happiness finally and am no longer afraid.

I began to realize my sexuality when I was 12 years old. One of my friends identified herself as bisexual and I had no idea what that could have meant, being only a child. When I discovered she liked girls I started to realize that all the women I “looked up to” were really women I found attractive. The day she kissed me I suddenly knew and understood, and I was terrified. So I suppressed it for another 7 years until I began to finally come out. I’m still not 100% where I’d like to be, but in the very near future I plan to be.

I believe being true to yourself is the direct pathway to happiness. I am only a stride away.

Sunday on film & tv.
I’d have to say that my favorite lgbt orientated movie would have to be Milk. I know, go with he classic right? It’s a wonderful story that everyone should see. Whenever someone comes into work asking about getting a general history of the lgbt community, the first two places I lead them are Milk and one of the many documentaries on Stonewall.
As far as television goes, I used to really love Degrassi with the way they handled lgbt youth narratives. Lately that show’s gone a little off the deep end, so I havent really been keeping up. I have to make a special shout out to Roseanne for her lgbt storylines as well.
I cant really say that Im a huge fan of glee and the way they portray the community. I think they’re really playing into the stereotypes. I mean, it’s Fox, how genuinely diverse can it really get?

LGBTQ* TV shows and Movies

In terms of movies, I have a lot more “funny” favorites than serious ones. “But I’m a Cheerleader” is hilarious, and even though it’s not “just” an LGBTQ*  movie, “Wet Hot American Summer” is great - it’s so funny, guys! I also enjoy the comedy/musical “Were the World Mine”.

I feel like I should be obligated to throw out a “Boys Don’t Cry” recommendation as a trans man, but to be honest I have never seen it, mostly because I have never found a time when I feel like I can watch it and not get extremely frightened or upset. But I’ve heard it’s good, so watch it!

I have TONS of lgbtq* tv shows to recommend. I like more light-hearted fare such as RuPaul’s Drag Race and Big Gay Sketch Show. I’m sure many of you are familiar with them both, but in case you aren’t: RPDR is a funny, easy-on-the-eyes, and often heartwarming drag queen competition/extravaganza. Big Gay Sketch show is basically an all-lgb version of SNL. RElated note, an online series I like is In Your Box Office (related because one woman is in both of these), a lesbian comedic take on reviewing movies that’s up on Autostraddle.com. Another funny show that I sometimes like is Rick & Steve, although sometimes it’s kind of offensive. Oh, and I’m a BIG Will & Grace fan. In fact, I think I’m gonna watch it when I’m done writing this up. In terms of more serious tv shows, I like The L Word. I know it’s overdramatic and all, but I quite enjoyed it, especially since it’s something my best friend and I share.

There are a lot of documentaries that I really like, and I’ve found more trans*-related documentaries than other shows, which is a shame. Transgeneration is one of the best documentaries I’ve watched, lgbtq* or not, hands down. It follows two Mtf and Ftm individuals of college age who are beginning their transitions. I would really recommend it. There’s also a documentary called Genderqueer that follows a few people who identify as, well, genderqueer, and it’s rather good. I also liked The DL, a documentary about closeted African-American men. There are some other good documentaries that I would recommend but can’t put my finger on the names - there was one about gay Mormons, another about studs and butch women, and another about two male Gospel musicians who are also lovers. I enjoyed all of these so if any of you recognize them, please post it!

In addition, there are a lot of LGBT* comedians who have had TV specials that I would recommend - Margaret Cho, Eddie Izzard, and Susan Westerfield come to mind. Also, Ellen.

I’m sure with more time I could come up with a million more, since I voraciously consume pop culture, and media of all kinds. In any case, please check out these movies and tv shows if any of them pique your interest, and let us know what you think!

Happy happy Thursday!

I’m not too experienced with lgtbq in the media, but I always jump at the chance to see some! I’m sticking with the classics/basics, the ones which almost everyone has already seen, because that’s pretty much all I’ve watched myself.

My favorite lgtbq related movie is with out a doubt Prayers For Bobby. It’s the first Gay related movie I ever saw, and it’s such an amazing story. It’s honestly the first movie to ever make me cry. And the actors and screenwriters did a fantastic job at adding the emotion into the movie, you can really get a sense of what everyone is feeling, and those feelings portray into your own feelings.

Still sticking with the basics, Milk. I loved this movie, and only watched it a few months ago as a result of all of my friends encouraging me to watch it. I’ve also read Harvey Milk’s biography, The Mayor Of Castro Street; The Life In Times Of Harvey Milk. The book is actually very mundane, but the movie really brings it to life. It shows the tough journey of a gay man trying to make a difference in a not-so-understanding time. It’s an important thing to be informed about, a real milestone in lgtbq politics in history.

Brokeback Mountain. In all honesty, I did not like that movie at all. The story is good, and sad and whatnot. But entertainment wise, the movie is just so boring and stretched out, I can hardly ever get through the whole thing without falling asleep. And that’s all I really have to say about that.

For television shows, I LOVE QUEER AS FOLK! Best TV show ever! And I’m so sad that it was ever cancelled. I do really like the british version better, I don’t really have much reasoning behind that, but I just do. I do wish the British version had lasted longer than the first two seasons, because it was fantastic. The only thing I really like about the American version is that it goes on much longer and there are loads more episodes. But I think the show, in both versions, really highlights an ideal lqtbq person’s life. At least, what I think would be an ideal life for me, which is why I like it so much.

And of course, there’s Glee. I really liked the first season, with Kurt and the things that he had to go through were important to show to high school students. But recently, it seems that it’s just all about the gay, which I don’t like at all. So much, that it’s starting to turn me away from the show. I don’t want Glee to be known as ‘The Gay Show’ I think having Kurt and Blaine is good, but keep everything else how it was. It’s important to not over-emphisize something like that.

Anyway, watching lgtbq media give me a lot of hope. I live in a farm town, aching to get out of this place, and watching these movies and shows gives me hope for a better life somewhere else, more active in the lgtbq community.

Wednesday on TV and Movies

Happy Wednesday everyone! I’m stoked on this week’s topic, so I’m just going to delve right into it and give you a small list of movies and tv shows.

Movies:

  1. But I’m a Cheerleader - This is the very first LGBTQ* movie I ever watched when I was 18 and it is still, to this day, one of my favorite movies ever. Not only is the queen of drag, RuPaul in it, but so is Clea DuVall and she is UNF UNF UNF. It’s really quite a romantic and silly movie. It had me laughing and “aw”ing at the same time. There’s a sex scene in that movie that is so hot and steamy that it’s hard not to want to go over to your hot neighbor’s house, romance her and have your own titillating same-sex sex scene.
  2. After Sex - This is shallow but I’m putting this movie only because, who doesn’t want to see Mila Kunis and Zoe Saldana have sex, right?
  3. Brokeback Mountain - Yes, I realize someone is going to be rolling their eyes and saying this is an obvious choice but really, I don’t care. This movie, no matter how many times I see it and even though I know what’s gonna happen, makes me cry every time. There are few movies that pull at the heartstrings like this one does for me. The relationship between Jack and Eenis is just so sad and complex and romantic, and it really makes you think.

TV:

  1. Ugly Betty - This show isn’t about LGBTQ* but it has plenty of gay characters as well as an MTF transgendered individual. I love that it’s a mainstream television show and yet it didn’t degrade the LGBTQ* characters by making fun of them or making them stereotypical. Maybe I’m coming from a privileged view point, but I think they portray the characters very accurately and very real. The show has a lot of drama, twists and turns and is an out-right laugh riot at the same time. If you have Netflix, all 4 seasons are on there.
  2. Will & Grace - This is one of my favorite shows of all time. I have seen every episode a hundred times and it never gets old. My favorite characters/relationship is Jack and Karen, they are wildly funny. I love Jack’s flamboyant personality and Will’s more serious one and how they interact together.

So that’s just a short list of the MANY movies and shows I love that involve the LGBTQ* community.

If the followers have any suggestions, please send in your favorites to the ask! I’m always looking for new movies and shows to watch.

Peace and Love from your Wednesday.
